The Childrens Home at Polonnaruwa

If you’re visiting Sri Lanka and are intent on seeing something other than the 1,600 kms of coastline that the island has to offer you’ll probably find yourself considering a visit to Polonnaruwa, the town famed for it’s 1,000 year old ruins that were declared a World Heritage site in 1988. I’ve been there a couple of times and have always enjoyed my visits, most recently in May 2014 after we’d completed our Sri Lankan Airlines and LSR Coast to Coast cycling and hiking adventure. We’d had a few days rest…

Sri Lanka; Portrait Photography at it’s Finest

Words by David Wise and Lamia Hossain. Photographs by Lamia Hossain. The photos in this article were taken on a rest day during the recent Sri Lankan Airlines and LSR coast-to-coast adventure, a 650 km cycling and hiking exploration of the Indian Ocean paradise that is the island of Sri Lanka. There were five of us in the team, three travel writers from England, myself (a photographer from Canada) and LH, our local guide provided by LSR. The main goal of our journey was to become the first team of tourists…

LSR Hotel, Bentota

LSR are a tour company operating in Sri Lanka. They specialize in activity tours; sporting (I did a very good hiking based tour with them – their guides are excellent), bird/animal watching and cultural. The hotel they’ve got in Bentota is worth a mention here, as you probably won’t find out about it anywhere else, and I think you’d enjoy staying there. It’s a little way out of the main town centre of Bentota, about a fifteen minute walk from the bus and train stations I guess, and then you…

Sandy Lane Hotel, Unawatuna

I wanted a few days on the beach after a hard week of marathon training in Galle, so I caught a local bus for about 5 miles down the coast to the backpacker hangout of Unawatuna. It’s not too well signposted and the bus driver overshot the turning, so I had a bit of walk back down the main road before I could turn the palm gardens and the Unawatuna area. The guidebook map was very basic and I soon lost track of where I was so couldn’t find the…

Mr Koddikara’s Hotel & Mrs Khalid’s restaurant, Galle

The Tuk Tuk driver who picked me up from Galle train station warned me not to go to Mr Koddikara’s. ‘It’s dirty,’ he said, ‘and expensive.’ I figured he was just after taking me to a place where he could get a commission, so insisted on Koddikara’s place. I’m glad I did. This is the view you get of the hotel from the road, just before you go into the front garden. It was late morning when I arrived and it took a few minutes to find anybody. Mr Koddikara…

The Hotel Deephani, Negombo

Location - On the beach in Negombo, just a 20 minute tuk tuk taxi ride to or from the airport. The hotel is well signed from Lewis Place, the main road leading along the Negombo beach area. The hotel can arrange a tuk tuk to the airport, or a pick up for a cheap price, about £3 each way for a tuk tuk or double that for a car. Or, to pay an even cheaper price, just walk onto Lewis place and engage any of the tuk tuk drivers you’ll find…

The Paradise Beach Hotel, Negombo

Location - On the beach in Negombo, just a 20 minute tuk tuk ride to or from the airport. The hotel is easily found on Lewis Place, the main road leading along the Negombo beach area. Check In/Reception - Quick and easy, no problems. The friendly staff offer a glass of fresh mango juice to cool you down as you sign in. The Room - The room was fine, very comfortable, with air con and a fan, a decent view over pool and beach, and a TV with a huge array of satellite…
