Location -Â On the beach in Negombo, just a 20 minute tuk tuk ride to or from the airport. The hotel is easily found on Lewis Place, the main road leading along the Negombo beach area.
Check In/Reception -Â Quick and easy, no problems. The friendly staff offer a glass of fresh mango juice to cool you down as you sign in.
The Room -Â The room was fine, very comfortable, with air con and a fan, a decent view over pool and beach, and a TV with a huge array of satellite channels (including sports – at least 5 live English football matches every week are shown). There was free tea and coffee, a fridge and a safe.
The bathroom had fresh towels and toiletries and everything was cleaned every day. All in all everything was clean, comfy and worked well, I had no complaints at all, apart from the fact that the electrical sockets had odd fittings, which didn’t fit any adaptor that I had. As with many Sri Lankan hotels I’ve stayed in, what I had to do was put a 2 pin plug in at the same time as jamming a pencil into the top hole – not very safe looking but this is the way locals do it as well when they have foreign applicances.
The Restaurant & Pool - Breakfast is good as long as you stick to local food, such as curry and rice. Dinner was a lottery, there is usually something nice at the buffet, but you’ve got to try all the dishes to work out what it is, by which time you’re too full to actually have second helpings of the good stuff. One thing for sure, the pasta was always over cooked and soggy, and not worth it.
I’d advise to go al la carte for dinner if you stay here, or check out one of the many independent restaurants on Lewis Place.
The pool was great though. Always a sunbed to use, and fresh towels brought straight to you. The beach was right next to the pool, and there were showers.
In Summary -Â The hotel is a venue for weddings so the loud music tends to start up downstairs at 5pm weekends and not stop much before 11pm. Apart from this, at other times the room was very peaceful and quiet. At sundown the beach is a good safe place to watch sunset, which is as fabulous here as anywhere along the Sri Lankan west coast.
My verdict is that the Paradise Beach Hotel is good for couples or older people and a good choice if you are running the Sri Lankan marathon as it’s less than 1km from the finish line. Its a great mid range choice for Negombo, although if you’re after a beach holiday, I’d recommend you head south to Bentota, or Unawatuna.
